In one of my Regency books from the “Realm” series, I write of a couple forbidden to marry when young who reconnect when in their 50s. They are quite besotted with each other. Luckily for Mr Bennet, Mr Darcy’s generosity enables Lydia to marry Wickham, and Mr Bennet himself ‘would be scarcely ten pounds a year the loser.’ And it is Mr Bennet’s refusal to listen to Elizabeth’s advice to forbid Lydia to accept Mrs Forster’s invitation to go to Brighton, which precipitates the final catastrophe of Lydia running off with Wickham. Silly, emotional, and irrational, Mrs. Bennet's behavior does more to harm her daughters' chances at finding husbands than it does to help. She encourages Kitty and Lydia's bad behavior and her attempts to push Elizabeth into an unwanted marriage with Mr. Collins show her to be insensible of her children's aversion to a loveless marriage. But when Mr Bennet gets in the way of her plan by not visiting Mr Bingley, Mrs Bennet shows that she gets very annoyed. The fickle side of her character is displayed when Mr Bennet finally admits that he has seen Bingley.
